Penric is starting to loosen up. Given the religious differences in his own world could get him killed in the wrong parts, a vastly different cosmology suggests that people here won't care about 'are there four gods or five'. SO it might be safe to mention his status as a priest.
He's still not likely to bring up 'yes, I share my body with a demon, but don't worry, it's all Temple-sanctioned, and apparently divinely ordained', because even his coreligionists aren't happy with that.
The sentiment about distant but present gods is one Penric is familiar with -- for all that the gods are resent, they can't so easily reach into the world to act, except by nudges. Penric has probably had more divine encounters than most, even among the ordained.
Penric frowned. "So a 'Chosen' would be something analogous to what I'd call a saint, a conduit for a god to act on the world. Ours aren't generally age-limited, but a number of them appearing all at once... well, I'd find it troubling."
