Zevlor's interpretation isn't wrong, there's just a lot more to it than he realizes. After nearly 500 years of being manipulated - sometimes subtly, sometimes more overt - Furfur doesn't truly have a grasp on who he really is. How much of himself is his father's influence, and how many of his choices were really his own? Could he even trust that his rebelliousness was his true nature, or was it just another part of his father's plans?
"I can handle anything else," he says, trying to push down the feeling of relief threatening to overtake him. Normally, it wouldn't be such a big deal, but the bubble in his chest is too big and there's a burning sensation behind his eyes. It wouldn't do to break down in front of a stranger, even if Zevlor and his experience with Elturel would be sympathetic to his reaction. It was just a weakness he wasn't sure he could afford to show. "There's just no winning when it comes to archdevils. Once they've got a hold on you, you can never truly be sure that you're free."
Plus, there were other things to deal with.
"If the powers that be can take us from any time, any place, with any luck, they'll drop you off exactly when you need to be," Furfur says with a smile and a shrug. "Theoretically with your memories of this place so you're just a bit stronger and a smarter than when you left off."
