Barcus Wroot | Baldur's Gate 3 | Dryad

Season of Light

After the turmoil in the ocean, it feels a little like hubris, all this. It's beautiful, the lights in the crisp air, the couples and families walking arm in arm, but Barcus is feeling gloomy in spite of it. They were told from the start that there was something very wrong here, but it feels different now, having seen the evidence of that wrongness with his own eyes.

He strolls under the lights quietly, anyways, and somehow he has trained his cat to come with him on the jaunt. She follows at her own pace, trotting back and forth on a leash of green ribbon, which vanishes under a thick, knitted sweater he's put on her to keep her warm. This is his best friend right now, he makes no apology.

She's not his only friend, though. He may be carrying a few trinkets for others, in his pockets.

Grand Masquerade

Parties aren't his scene, really, but this is hardly the first he's been to, in Caldera. What, he wonders, is the significance of so many of their celebrations involving masks? Are they trying to tell the Visitors something?

At least there will be no ghosts tonight, presumably. When he steps across the threshold, he finds his plain, practical outfit transformed, suddenly close-fitting, sleek and shiny in silver, with ornate lines and curls across the surface. Never in his life has he selected an outfit quite so snug, and he can feel himself blushing behind the matching silvery mask (sooner or later he will have it out with this place about putting him in small animals costumes). Awkward, he backs toward the door again, as if to immediately depart, and that is how he discovers his costume has a tail, which he promptly trips over, landing on the floor.

Hopefully no one will trip over him on their way in.

The Land's Embrace

Once he's adjusted to his outfit, he finds himself drawn toward the room where Terra's garden blooms. Drawn in as if called, he enters, but as he circulates slowly, he feels more and more alienated. It's beautiful, thrumming with life, and he admires what he can see, but the more he observes, the less he feels this place is for him. Love and fertility fills the air and he is...alone. Even before his arrival in Caldera, he was alone. Wulbren is gone, and as much as he does care about the other Ironhands, they're not lovers, they're not family. They're kin, but distant.

It's the sort of thing that makes you wonder about your direction in life. He's built quite the career, but he wants so much more.

He turns to leave without addressing Terra or anyone else in the room. It's complicated.
